An independent candidate is running for mayor in Youngstown. Does anyone know Mr. Monroe?
Off The Ballot Already
According to the newspaper, Mr. Monroe turned in 72 signatures. As an independent candidate, he would have needed 138 valid signatures on his petitions.
Doesn't it seem unfair to require an independent candidate to collect 138 valid signatures and the party's candidate only needs 25 valid signatures?
This is unfair, and I believe a 6th District Court Judge rulked this unconstitutional under Ohio law last September. The current state legistlature has still not addressed this situation, so even though SOS Brunner has it listed in the 2009 Candidate book, I believe she has listed it wrong, it's still unconstitutional, and the independent's should be on the ballot if they have 25 valid signatures.
That's my interpretation....
