My wife is a Texan of mainly Mexican decent. And we have always wondered. Why do so many Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo? I have talked to many who don't even know what it means. And even more who do not know what the 5th of May is celebrated for.
And it is celebrated here in the states more than in Mexico, in many places.

Just curious!

I think it's probably like St Patrick's day--another reason to party.

It is observed here, and in many other places in the world, as a celebration of Mexican heritage. It also marks the last time that an army from another continent invaded the Americas (the French in 1862).
