Just in time for Christmas
Severstal Steel in Warren, Ohio will lay off over 600 workers and salaried staff. The employees may be called back to work in May 2009.
This is a bit off topic, but totally ON POINT:
One of the biggest reasons that GM is delaying the start of contstruction on
their new Volt/Cruz small engine plant in Flint, MI is the cost of all the structural
STEEL that will have to go into the new plant, when built.
I REALLY hope that when the times comes to move forward with the construction
of the plant, GM will give the contracts for the steel to AMERICAN STEEL MAKERS.
In days gone by, US Steel, Sheet and Tube, J&L, etc could have manufactured
all the steel that the American auto industry would ever need. Hopefully, when
the country does pull out of this severe recession and begin to recover,
businesses will give serious consideration to buying AMERICAN again.

Well a small bit of good news is that Profab (formerly CALEX) in Campbell, has called many workers back after a 2 month layoff. Seems they were bought out by a company that makes Nuclear reactor parts for electric plants that will be built in China. (sorry I forget the name of the company).
That's good news ! We, as a country, need to get other countries like China
buying goods from US, in stead of the other way around...it would work wonders
for our trade deficit.
Not to mention that we owe China billions and billions of dollars in government
loans.
The layoffs at Severstal Steel have now increased to between 700 and 800.
