Does anyone have historical info and photos of The
Parkway Tower apartment building at 291 Park Ave?
I lived there as a kid during the late 1970's-early 80's
and always loved this old building. Would love to read
up on the history of when it was built, by whom, etc.
Some of the elderly folks who lived there when I was there
used to tell me stories about the entire first floor of
the building being stores and shops, and that prominent
citizens of Youngstown had lived there over the years.
I remember Mrs Schaff who lived on the eight (very top)
floor and Judge Elwin Jenkins, who also lived there for
years.
What was on the site before Parkway Towers was built?
Was it built on the site of another, older single
family home?
The Parkway Tower was built in 1929. This is a recent photo of your boyhood home.
Here is an old picture of Parkway Tower, taken from
the LadyNews500 folders on WebShots.com. many thanks to
her for posting this online.
I see that the aluminum awning that used to cover the
front porch is gone, sadly, along with the canvas awning
that used to go all the way out to the curb.
Too bad YSU hasn't bought this building, especially
since they are running short on student housing. The
location would make Parkway Tower ideal for this, as
it is only a few blocks away.
