Did any else see the historical home on Broadway between Fifth Ave. and Ohio that is being torn down today. It is very sad to see these old homes go. I stopped at lunch time and took pictures. :(

Someone told me that this was the home of Charles(?) Owsley - a
famous architect back in Youngstown's glory days. He designed many
of the buildings of that period in Youngstown - along with quite a few
mansions that Youngstown's wealthy and elite citizens lived in.
I had made some inquiries on this house and had even tracked down
someone who held a lien against this property (This was another former
"Mark Mallen" property in disgrace). I was interested in buying it and
fixing it up, but did not have sufficient capital to buy the house at the
time.
Needless to say, I am very disappointed to see it torn down.

Here's what I have been able to find out about this [now gone] historic home:
1) It was the home of Charles Owsley(sp?), who was a nationally renounded
architect. Owsley designed many homes and buildings in Youngstown in
his time. I have been told that, among other things, the house used to
have a sunk-in bathtub and was very beautiful back in the day.
2) The new owner of the property is the one responsible for tearing
the house down. I've been told that there is a group home next door
to this property and that the group home's owner purchased the lot
and had it cleared for use as additional parking space and recreation
space for the group home.
3) I know a gentleman named Martin Ortman, who still held a lien
against this property from a bad debt that originated back when
a man named Mark Mallen had an ownership stake in this (and
many, MANY others....) property. When I first started buying
properties in the Wick Park Historic District, I looked at this
old home and was interested in buying and restoring it to
service as habitable housing - unfortunately it took too long
for me to locate the lien holder in an attempt to procure free
and clear title to the property, so I moved on and looked at
other properties nearby instead.
I have two photographs of the exterior that I took about a year
ago, which I will post in another message right after this one.
There was an orange sign stuck to the front of the house, on
the porch, that stated the house had been ordered vacated,
and that it had been "winterized" - at the time I thought this
was a good thing and that someone would eventually buy and
restore this old house.
