Youngstown City Council
Reorganization Meeting
Monday, January 4, 8:00 p.m.
- Location -
City Council Chambers
Sixth Floor
City Hall
26 S. Phelps Street
Downtown Youngstown
wow, 8:00 pm sounds very late for that group..
The city charter mandates the day and time of the reorganization meeting.
Dumb question, but..... WHAT, exactly, are they re-organizing... the furniture?
This is the opportunity for city council, with four new council members, to make committee assignments. Years ago, committee assignments were largely based upon seniority. Now, politics often comes into play. In recent times, some councilmen were prevented from chairing council committees or were only assigned to one or two minor committees.
The plum position is chairing the powerful finance committee.
Some people are saying that this will be a divided city council. After all, not all councilmen could agree to be sworn in at the same time on the same day by the same person.
If council (both new and old) can remember that it is not about them, but about the people they represent it might work.. ::)
I hope this New council of representatives put education, experience s and knowledge over the appointments for committee s not egos.
I think that seeing how this council divides the committee appointments
will tell a great deal about what we might expect about their ability to work
for the good of the city as a whole. I also hope we see some
changes of how meetings are run and citizens are heard from. It will be difficult
as long as the current president of council remains in office though, I believe.
Question
Which of these returning councilmen has the most seniority?
Second Ward Councilman T.J. Rogers
Third Ward Councilman Nate Pinkard
Fourth Ward Councilman Mike Ray
What time is the meeting on Monday.
8:00 p.m.
Answer-Mike Ray
I still laugh at that 8:00 pm time- iwasthere aren't you getting ready for bed at that time
I hope that this 8:00 pm fits into the schedule of the newly elected council members-Especially the one (s) who designated their office hours.
QuoteAnswer-Mike Ray
I believe you are correct. Mike Ray was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Carol Righetti when she resigned to become a Mahoning County Commissioner. He was elected to his first term in 2011. Councilman Ray is starting his second (and last) 4-year term.
What a night at city council.
The first big controversy was which councilmen would sit on the Committee on Standing Committee Appointments.
- First Slate
Councilman Pinkard
Councilman Ray
Councilwoman Adamczak
Councilwoman Davis
The vote was 2-5. The slate was rejected.
- Second Slate
Councilwoman Adamczak
Councilman Ray
Councilwoman McNally
Councilwoman Davis
The vote was 2-5. The slate was rejected.
- Third Slate
Councilman Rodgers
Councilman Pinkard
Councilman Ray
Councilwoman Adamczak
The vote was 2-5. The slate was rejected.
- Fourth Slate
Councilman Pinkard
Councilman Ray
Councilan Rodgers
Councilwoman Adamczak
The vote was 4-3. The slate passed but only after a scolding from the President of Council.
What time did that get over? :'(
QuoteWhat time did that get over? :'(
The meeting lasted well past 9:00 p.m. This included an executive session in the caucus room where committee assignments were made.
Let's see if the newspaper reports the committee assignment information in today's edition.
The new Seventh Ward Councilwoman and the new Sixth Ward Councilwoman repeatedly voted against each proposed slate of members for the committee.
We probably won't know Why, am I correct on that!! :-\ :-\
There's some strange politics in play here.
Cs had no business berating ytown council representative s for going against the proposed slate. If Cs did not have the stomach or fortitude being part of the democratic process he must resigned from his position as presid ent of council. If the fools wanted to go until midnight or early into next morning let it. They will look like fools without Cs assistance in this matter Cs said, "it was politics"does he know for certain. Stay tune folks the circus had just started with Its performers
I agree with you iwasthere-If it took all night let it be, but do not bully the committees to get done-
Cs and ytown city council representatives should follow Benjamin Franklin advice, " let people think you are fool instead of removing all doubt by opening your mouth and removing any doubt." If these individuals follows this advice ytown residents will have a win win situation for their city's future success in all avenues of recovery.

So, you're saying that they can't even come up with a committee to assign who's going to be on
the committees ?
LOL
:)
QuoteSo, you're saying that they can't even come up with a committee to assign who's going to be on the committees ?
YES
    Wow it's gonna be a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong 4yrs
i wished mayor McNally all the LUCK AND SUCCESS with the new and reelected council reps because he will need additional patience with council and president of council who thinks he IS TARZAN of the council chambers.
If he is Tarzan who is Jane
Clairia muluso

A few residents have said that if this new council doesn't work together it might be time to initiate
A RECALL
ATTENTION ALL CANDIDATES-Do Not put your signs-tee-shirts-or emery boards away..
I could see a recall on the council representative s for not going to block watches are the ones at risk for a recall.
The result of a brain drain is a pool of unqualified stupid leaders to choose from. Solution : scrap the present form of government and let the people CONTRACT, a City Manager.
Sometimes I wonder if the councilmen have much effect on the legislation that comes before them. I get the impression that the city hall staff/departments come up with the legislation and a councilman just attaches his or her name to it.
After I do some research, I'll give an example from the first council meeting of this year.
