I haven't seen a new issue of the Walruss for weeks.  Some say that the publication has suspended operation.

Walruss on 'indefinite hiatus'

The self-proclaimed alternative news source of Youngstown, "The Walruss," has announced an indefinite publication hiatus.

A message was sent out by the MySpace account for The Walruss, which read:

"the walruss will be on an indefinite hiatus.

thanks to all the readers, breeders, word-spreaders, contributors, thinkers, Youngstowners...

we may be back, we may not.

thanks again."

The publication published its first issue Aug. 30, with new issues released every two weeks. It was published by Joseph Rafidi II, and Leonard Glenn Crist served as the editor-in-chief.

Eight issues in total were published, the last being Dec. 7. They were distributed free of charge to readers from various local businesses.

According to an editorial announcement by The Walruss in the first issue, "The Walruss" offered "an alternative outlook and coverage on the issues, events and times that are shaping the Mahoning Valley, Ohio and beyond." Content included "commentary, music, comedy, theater, and the arts," the article read.

Crist declined to comment on the status of "The Walruss" and Rafidi was unable to be contacted.
