Title: Boating On The Mahoning
Post by: Towntalk on July 12, 2013, 11:53:11 AM
Wouldn't it be swell to bring recreational boating back to the Mahoning River?

The Mahoning Pleasure Boat Company had it's dock at Spring Commons and rented boats, and also had a steam boat that it ran up and down the river.

What really chaps my hide is the fact that Warren (UGGH) takes advantage of local history ie P&O Canal and other river assets while Youngstown sits on it's hands and does nothing.

The P&O Canal ran through Youngstown and had 3 docks here as well as 2 spots where canal boats could turn around, and while most of the old canal was filled in and is now used by rail roads, there surely must be some signs of it still with us.

The river area at Spring Commons was where the old pleasure boat docks were, so surely some visionary group could do something there.

A dock area with a historical marker wouldn't go amiss, but then that is thinking out of the box, and few folks here seem to be capable of that these days.
