Avalon Gardens Pizza, formerly on the north side, is coming to a location on Mahoning Avenue in the little plaza at the corner Mahoning and Dunlap.
The biggest and best news since the U. S. landing on the moon. Nay since the announcement that Nazi Germany surrendered ending WW2 in Europe and the surrender of Japan ending the war in the Pacific.
tt let us put our claws back into our paws. i thought the biggest news in ytown was that rr and ibc agreed the other day.
??? Who, me ???
Having the Avalon back up and running is great news regardless of what side of town it's on ... provided another west side business doesn't result in contaminated water. Who knows what this west side business has done in the long term ... we already know that this west side business caused a number of earthquakes.
I'm sure Jay will let us know what the Avalon's menu will consist of besides pizza, and I will be looking forward to it. And the congregation said with one voice amen.
Question ... On June 15, 2012 WKBN had this story. Did the owners follow through with a downtown location or did it fall through in favor of the west side?
A new restaurant is coming to downtown Youngstown, but its name is old, and so is its pizza recipe.
Anne Massullo-Sabella's grandfather opened the original Avalon Gardens on Belmont Avenue in 1922.
He sold it to another family in 1970, which Anne ironically ended up marrying into.
Because of the common bond, and the fond memories of their family history, the new Avalon Gardens Pizzeria will offer what Massullo-Sabella calls a seasonal, regional cuisine in a bistro atmosphere.
The owners said they're happy to be located downtown.
"An opportunity presented itself, downtown has really grown so much in the last probably four to five years, a lot of new businesses have been coming down here and it's an exciting time downtown," said Massullo-Sabella.
Co-owner Angela Snyder said they have been wanting to open in the downtown area for quite a while.
"Annie and I have been discussing for quite some time trying to bring something downtown just because it's become so alive down here with new businesses and the opportunity was perfect for us to come here," said Snyder.
The restaurant has been in the works since February.
The owners were anticipating opening next month, but are on hold with a couple of city permits, so they're hoping to open by the end of the summer.
The new owners have no connection to the Avalon Gardens tavern, which closed in January after owner James Donofrio went missing in September.

tt the avalon gardens restaurant is open next to silver vogue shoppe
Yes, the Avalon Downtown has very good pizza. Our office has ordered pizza from there 4-5 times since they opened. If this west side pizza is as good, I think they will be successful.
Thanks guys ... so then the west side store is just a branch shop while the main store is downtown. I too wish them well, but no big deal in the grand scheme of things since it means that the downtown store is having success.
Actually, from what I've heard, the west side Avalon is being opened by the Donofrio family, so it's unaffiliated with the downtown store.
are both pizza restaurant using the original recipe?
How can two different people be able to use the same business name and be able to claim that they are selling the original Avalon Pizza's?
We'll let the lawyers figure that out.
This Avalon Gardens location will also include Josephine's Italian Eatery & Bakery. The bakery will have bread, rolls, muffins, cupcakes, pies, brownies and more.
A young woman from Avalon Gardens was giving out coupons at a west side block watch meeting this week.
Coupon No.1 $1.00 Off on any food purchase of $10 or more
Coupon No.2 $1.00 Off on any bakery purchase of $10 or more
The same coupons are in the March 2013 issue or Reach Savings Magazine.
My understanding is that, legally, When Jim Donofrio purchased the Avalon Gardens on Belmont, the name was purchased with the restaurant.
The name is on the license, and the Donofrio family still owns the license and the name.
The Donofrio family is opening a new restaurant on Mahoning Avenue. The name is The Original Avalon Gardens.
It is NOT a branch off of the Avalon Downtown. In fact, the name of the pizza place downtown isn't even Avalon Gardens. It is Avalon Downtown.
The two are not related in any way, shape or form, other than the person who cooked the pizza at Jim Donofrio's Avalon Gardens decided to open the pizza place downtown with the name and the pizza recipe, against the wishes of the Donofrio family.
That's it.
peggy the saga continues over avalon's pizza's rights. ytown has its own pizza war, stay tune for more pizza drama.
Thanks for the clarification about the Avalon Gardens Peggy. We patronized the Avalon Gardens a number of times when they were here on the North Side and always enjoyed their food, so while we resent the move to the west side of this historic North Side landmark, we'll hold our noses while we get there, but will continue to enjoy their food.

I don't "resent" the move to the west side. Of course we'd have loved for them to have reopened on the north side, but for sentimental and emotional reasons, they just couldn't open in the same location, and another suitable (to them) location wasn't available.
So once they open, the original Avalon Gardens will get my support. Not the Avalon Downtown.
Peggy, I believe the Avalon Gardens on the west side has been open for a couple months, now.

I must have been half asleep when I replied. I was there on opening night. ::)
Pizza Poll
If you had the same pizza at all three locations, please take the poll.
I have, and took the poll. They both tasted the same. Probably because they're the same recipe - Jim's recipe. Only difference is, the downtown location is using the recipe without permission from the Donofrio family, which is being hashed out in court.
That being said, i'll support the west side location, because I support the Donofrio family.
