The police often refer to 43s.  What are 43s?

If they use the same signals found at this site,

A 43 is a signal for shots fired. :o

Quite a few of those shots fired in the area calls end up being people setting off fireworks. It never fails, someone sets off a couple of fireworks in their driveway and the little old lady down the street calls in saying she hears gunfire.

Not all 43's are gun fire but all gun fire are 43's :)

I always thought gunfire was one of those "you'll know it when you hear it" kind of things.  But, I was around guns when I was a kid.
