It was announced today that St. Matthias School on Shady Run Road will close. Enrollment had dropped to 61 students. St. Matthias was the last Catholic Elementary School on the south side of Youngstown. St. Christine School on the city's west side is the last Catholic elementary school in the city of Youngstown.

Ursuline has around 500 students.
Mooney has around 600 students.
Overall the suburban Catholic Schools appear to be in fairly fine shape. St. Christine's grabs most of Canfield, St. Joes and IHM cover Austintown, St. Luke and St. Charles covers Boardman.
Mighty shame isn't it. The test scores of the cities catholic schools to public show is like night and day. Very Sad.
Just saw the article that is running in the Monday Vindy about Immaculate Conception School, and agree that it's sad to see that Youngstown will be without Elementry Catholic Schools, and it's an even sadder commentary on the commitment of Bishop toward Youngstown's children.
It also makes me wonder how much longer the two High Schools will be here before they too are closed.
A solution to the dwindling population of younger families could have been a single, centrally located Elementry School. Certainly the board has sufficient numbers of school busses to transport the children. Did the diocese even consider that?
Well Candy don't forget about St. Christine's which will never close. They have 500+ students and that can he said about then 50 years ago.
Secondly there is NO BISHOP For the Youngstown Catholic Diocese. The last one, Tobin, didn't do anything right except spend millions on his homes and a stupid retreat center, those dollars could've saved these schools.
The 2 catholic high schools have powerful alumni with lots of money. Ursuline has raised over 1 million in its Centennial Year, yes its been around 100 years. They are trying to raise 2-3 more million for a who list of new items in the school. They just redid their parking lot.
Mooney is just fine. They have students from Poland-Canfield-Boardman. Enough said.
You forgot to add Sacred Heart School. Our current bishop saved Cardinal Mooney because of the DeBartelo/York families. This old man has thrown city children under the school bus, and that is why many members of my family have returned to their United Methodist roots.

Its because of a better class of parents, who raise their kids better, who make more
money and, in turn, can afford to send their kids to a better school,with better teachers,
administrators who actuallly give a sh#t, and do it on their own dime.
A somewhat broad generalization to be sure, but it's not amazing at all.....its logical.
Summit Academy High School now runs the halls of the previous St. Matthias School.
