This was one of the problems mentioned at the Housing Committee meeting.

An indigent resident was cited for housing violations under the criminal code.  The city had to provide a lawyer at a cost of $50 per hour for time spent on the case both in and out of court.  The person was then sent to jail.  It costs the city about $70 per day to house someone in the county jail for a violation of a city ordinance.

One resident has spend about 90 days in jail for various code violations.  The city has spent thousands of dollars to keep the person in jail and the housing violation was not resolved.
