Title: Next Third Ward Councilman (?)
Post by: jay on July 24, 2011, 08:31:01 PM
A Question For North Side Residents

If Councilman Brown becomes the President of Youngstown City Council, who will be appointed the next third ward councilman?

I don't. Know who will get "elected" by the 10 precinct people but apparently that person will not only finish out Tito's term they will also run unopposed  for the next term because of the timing of this. I think that is BS that the north side cannot elect their councilman!

the names that are being thrown out there are pat lowry from tim ryan's office and joe palermo. these two would be excellent for this job.

Is Mr. Palermo related to another public office holder with the same last name?

I have heard Tyler Clark and Joe Teague and apparently Mr. Teague can vote for himself.

The last time I heard Joe Teague lived on Evergreen so how could he be Third Ward Councilman? Are you referring to the Joe Teague that ran for Mayor a while back?

Yes, the same Joe Teague.  My understanding is that he now lives on the north side and that he is the "precinct person" in his precinct.  Therefore he can vote for himself.  I don't know where to check the accuracy of this information but  I heard it from someone who is usually a reliable source.

Thsnks for th update on Joe. I know that the talk hosts at WKBN have a lot of respect for him, and I've known him for many years andshare that respect. The man is real which is more that can be said for most local politicians. Given a chance he could be another Pete Starks.

If you want to meet Joe Teague, come to the National Night Out picnic.  He attended the last few years.

There already is interest from Joe Louis Teague, a 3rd Ward committee member and unsuccessful 2005 mayoral candidate. If nothing else, Teague has already locked up at least 10 percent of the vote.

Exactly my point. I don't think he should be allowed to vote for himself. This councilman will finish Tito's term and get the next full term. I don't think that it fair to the residents of the 3rd ward.

Perhaps this method of choosing a replacement councilman should be addressed by the Youngstown Charter Review Commission.
Does this fall under state election law or the local charter?  Does anyone know for sure?

City charter.

Of those mentioned on this forum, which would you choose?

Tyler Clark
Pat Lowry
Joe Palermo
Joe Teague
or someone else (make your own suggestion)

Teague.

I would probably go with Tyler Clark.

As another potential candidate, I have heard rumblings about Jason Whitehead potentially running for the spot.  With Mayor Williams leaving Mr. Whitehead's current position with the City may be in jeopardy.  He would make an interesting candidate for the third ward.

I'd also choose Tyler Clark.  But honestly, I don't know enough about the other candidates to make an informed decision.

I would go for Tyler Clark - this man has integrity, a vested interest in the community and an outstanding
reputation as a decent human being...he is also working every day to help make Younstown a better
place.

His track record speaks very well of him....

joe teague has my support if he runs for this position. pat lowry is too busy representing tim ryan's adjenda. where would he find time to give the 3rd ward residents their full time eupport on their matters. i was told tyler clark was too busy to commit to this job. i was not impressed by jason whitehead as chief of staff, park and recreational director performances during his tenure under my mayor "J" adminstration. joe palermo has the knowledge of the city problems esp the housing and demo part because he worked in that dept until his retirement. may the best and qualified man win this position.

You must have finally gone insane.  Thank God you do not live in the 3rd ward. I don't know Teague. Although I remember him during the debates in the 05 mayoral race.  I couldn't understand a word he said. It is well known that Palermo spent more time at Mahoning Country Club golfing then working while at the City. At least 3day a week minimum.  I guess if you feel that qualifys him to be a Councilman then ..... Yikes! If the committee chairs elect either of these guys I will have lost any shred of faith that I had in the City.  Jason Whitehead understands the Citys problems you obviously do not like him due to his association with Jay and your relationship with Maggy. Give me one good reason that Whitehead is not far and away the best candidate of the three. Other then that he was Jays COS of course. Please be specific.

stewie when jason whitehead would represent the mayor's office at any public meetings he would not no the answers to the questions that were brought to him. he would say i do not know where the mayor stands on that position. he is the chief of staff making $75,000 a year, he should know the answers to questions that are put forth to him by any residentence of ytown. the 7th ward coalition had a hell of the time trying to convince him that the parks in the 7th ward needed fixing just ask mary krupa from the Powerstown blockwatch/Snoops that is in the 7th ward. whitehead did not know that his church(mt calvary ch) was not paying thier property taxes when asked by the vindy eventhough he is the ch's fiscal financial officier. stewie next time when their is a public meeting in ytown come forth and introduce yourself to maggie and I and let the games begin. i see jay williams as snake oil salesmen and you see him as best thing to happen to ytown since slice bread. i say potato and you say potatoe.

Results of my informal poll of north side residents at the North Side Farmers' Market

Their choice was Pat Lowry.

I would also choose Pat. I know him and also serve on a board with him. He and his wife have lived on the north side for many years. I find him to be a hard working man who will get things done.

How much does a city councilman get paid?

$37,000 per year plus full medical benefits.  Not bad for a part-time job.  Especially considering the recent Vindy article that said Girard Councilman only earn $4,000 per year.

$28,000 plus benefits. if the council rep has benefits through his/her spouse they can opt out of the city's plan and collect an additional $150.00 a month while the new fire fighters make $24,500 per year while putting their lives on the line. where is the justification on the pay between these two city positions? pat is a nice guy but he will not do the 3rd ward justice if he holds both jobs at the sametime while representing ryan's district and the 3rd ward. will pat go to residence's home at 3 am in the morning to squash a neighborhood fight with the police while being an employee of tim ryan's office ytown staff? joe teague is the only one of the many canditates has attended council meetings on a regular basis. the other ones i never seen at the council meetings.

Apparently Joe Teague moved to the north side because his home on Evergreen that he has owned for the last 40 years is condemned.  If you can't even maintain your own home and have contributed to the blight of this city I don't think you should be a councilman.

The fact that he goes to council meetings in no WAY qualifies him for the position.

oh really. i bet your qualifications are canditates that run for this office is to attend two council meetings a month before filing date and run like an informed canditate aka brown, kitchen, drennan, tarpley with all the knowledge one possesses through a crash course given to them by their mentor aka MY MAYOR "J". stewie if you attended the financial caucus meetings before the regular council meetings. you would see at first hand how chuck sammorone had to educate these four golden geese that were "MY MAYOR J" prodigees on procedures and how to gather information to make informative descisons before the monthly council meetings in which joe teague has in the past attended before and during the council meetings. just because one speaks well and is easy on the eyes does not mean this person canbe an effective member on any board elected or not.i never seen any of those four individuals involved in the community until they ran for these council seats. joe has been involved in the community alot longer and noticeable in the ytown happenings. joe will not shay away from his responsibilities at anytime of the day, would your canditate respond the same way mr. teague would?
