Onward with Healthcare NOT Warfare -- 2009
"Healthcare NOT Warfare."
It started out a year ago as a concept and quickly became a nationwide campaign.
The human energies fueling Healthcare NOT Warfare have included vast doses of human determination and hope.
A statement from Martin Luther King Jr. quickly became the watchwords of the Healthcare NOT Warfare campaign: "A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death." To move beyond the cruel priorities of the warfare state will require methodical organizing every day. And that's the gist of Progressive Democrats of America.
Congressman Conyers spoke at the Washington, D.C. kickoff of Healthcare NOT Warfare. As the lead congressional sponsor of the visionary single-payer healthcare bill H.R. 676, he has articulated the humane logic and social rationality of establishing an "enhanced Medicare for all" healthcare system in the United States.
Now, with the Obama presidency underway, the healthcare future of this country is up for grabs. Opposition to single-payer is fierce, while all kinds of scenarios are being floated that--one way or another--claim to be "healthcare reform" while keeping insurance companies at the center of healthcare in this country.
The crux of the choice is this:
* We can fight for the goal of mandating private insurance coverage for all, so that--at best--tens of millions of Americans can keep scraping together money for premiums with insurance policies featuring high deductibles and coverage loopholes big enough to drive an ambulance through.
Or,
* We can fight for the goal of guaranteeing healthcare for all.
Healthcare NOT Warfare. It's not just a good idea. It's our future--if we can create it.
