Youngstown Hires New Officers to Combat Crime
Story from the WFMJ TV21 Web Site on 6/4/2007.

The City of Youngstown hires five new patrol officers to help combat crime.

Today, the men and women took their oath of office in front of family and friends.

The officers will help as the city teams up with the Mahoning sheriff's office and Ohio Highway Patrol in zero tolerance towards crime.

The city hopes the interdiction patrols will reduce the number of drive-by shootings and gang activity.

"We want the environment, like the prosecutor said, to be too stifling, and too hot to engage in or to just brazenly engage in these activities," says Mayor Jay Williams.

The mayor also announced the city received a 230-thousand dollar grant for two years to help combat gang activity.
