Ceremony Celebrates Life of Harriet Taylor Upton

A Valley native's ashes are now back at the site she called home for so many years.

The Upton Association held a special ceremony Saturday night honoring the life and work of Harriet Taylor Upton.

Upton was born in Ravenna and played a leading role in the women's suffrage movement, serving as the first woman vice chair of the National Republican Executive Committee. She also was the founder and first president of the Warren American Red Cross Chapter.

Upton moved away from the area and died in California in 1945.

The Upton Association worked to get her ashes back to the place she called home. A California Judge granted their petition.
