At this time last year the city had only 4 homicides.

These were the eleventh and twelfth homicides of the year.

Police say the shooting deaths of two on Youngstown's South Side may have happened during a burglary.

According to police, a 20-year-old male and a 17-year-old female were found dead in an upstairs bedroom of a 243 E. Avondale Ave duplex at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

When officers first arrived at the home, they found that the front door had been broken in. They went upstairs and found the victims dead in a bedroom.

"It appeared it could have been a burglary in progress as the way the call came in," said police Chief Rod Foley. "Our officer responded and found signs of forced entry. They made some calls into the establishment, the residence, they went inside, and that's when they found two bodies shot."

At least 100 people gathered in the streets, sidewalks and yards outside the home, and several additional officers were called to the area to help with crowd control.

A woman told police she had heard four gunshots in the area earlier Tuesday morning but did not see anyone leave the duplex.

I just heard a report on the radio that a double homicide has taken place on the south side of Youngstown.
