About four years ago, an 1831 Greek revival home in Poland Village was about to be demoed.  Town One Streetscapes a true community organizing team set out to save the historic structure.  The owner of the building offered the house to anyone who would move it so since I was the only one who had the experience in house moving, they asked me if I would.  We found an end user and they were more than willing to invest.  So we started to prepare the house for moving.  While I was pulling up the cement driveway with my machine we discovered a stone well under the driveway.  Knowing that artifacts maybe in old wells, I began digging up the stone well, after a few shovel fulls, out rolls this civil war cannon ball.  I ran to my store and got on the internet and researched cannon balls and found out that this projectile was a semi-rare "smooth bore"  which was used to fire on advancing formations into the overhead trees which resulted in the smashing of branches, trunks and limbs.  This effect terrorized the advancing troops causing panic and flight.  Apparently, Yellow creek during the civil war was a center for iron making for the Union Army.

The funny thing about the whole thing was the cannon ball resulted in a battle between the owner of the historic house and the new owner, both very prominent individuals in the community.  Money was not an object and both parties were willing to wheel and deal for the cannon ball, the new owner I remember was willing to release a bad contractor if he was able to get the cannon ball.  I settled the matter by donating the cannon ball to the Village of Poland.  This morning, a friend who is an Atty. walked into my office while I was on the phone, picked up the cannon ball and said he was borrowing it, will this story end?
