Structural steel is being erected on the south wall of the Realty Building. Someone told me it is for a new fire escape.
Question
Why would there be two openings per floor onto the new structure?

Here's a plan from the Park South Development website:

According to that plan, this stair will be enclosed. I'm not sure why there are 2 openings per floor, though.
There might be some type of interior dividing wall that makes two openings
on each floor necessary, or there might be some kind of building code
that requires it for that particular building.
I could visualize the enclosed staircase. Maybe the first opening would access a small balcony for a condo located at this end of the building.
Balconies would definitely add to the looks of the building, not to mention
offering a great view for the apartments/condos. It would be nice to be
able to slide open the patio door in your living room and walk out and see
the view of downtown, and the square.

Two openings per floor because there are two apartments per floor.
Never thought I'd see the day.
