Ohio ranks 6th in nation for hunger

Comments: 1 ShareThis Ohio ranks 6th in the nation for hunger with 1 of 6 households not having enough money for food, a new federal report today shows.

In its annual report on food insecurity, the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that conditions in Ohio have deteriorated since two years ago when the state ranked 12th in the nation with 13.2 percent of households struggling to buy food – 3.2 percentage points lower than today.

"It's the economy. Our economy is not recovering and the jobs that are there do not pay a livable wage. How much more data do we need to see? Ohio is not moving in the right direction," said Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks.

The downturn in Ohio is in contrast with the national picture.

The report found the percentage of U.S. households with food insecurity remained unchanged between 2008 and 2010 at 14.5 percent.

A household is considered food insecure if a member of the household says in a survey that it does not have enough food for all members at some time during the year.

Five southern states ranked higher than Ohio. Mississippi led the nation last year with 1 in 5 residents not having enough to eat followed by Texas, Arkansas, Alabama and Georgia.

Look at the criteria for being "food insecure".  How vague can you get, asking someone in a survey if they didn't have enough food at SOM point during the year.  With how dumbed down peopl are these days that could mean they went to McDonalds one night and ran out of money before they could buy big macs for everyone.

This is completely worthless drivel.  How do I know that.  If you don't have enough money for food, YOU DIE! These people are not dead if they COULD RESPOND TO A SURVEY!

So Dennis, can we assume that because of your concerns, you are volunteering at one of the food banks, or missions? No, that's not part of your agenda. All you want to do is help people with someone else's money.

So Dennis, you never did say which service organization that helps the needy, you volunteered to work with. Did I just miss it, or don't you help the needy?

Dennis, there seems to be some disagreement between you and your President's wife. You think hunger is a problem, and she thinks obesity is a problem. Which do you suppose it is?

Sorry Dennis, but obesity is a much larger problem with the poor.
