Wind turbines blow out cash for schools

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Wind turbines on state owned property are credited with generating more than $ 1 million dollars last year.

According to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, the revenue from the turbines will go towards kindergarten through 12th grade public schools across the state.

According to the D.N.R.,  wind power projects are growing in popularity. "There's a pretty good market in Washington, Oregon, and California for what's considered clean renewable type energy and so a lot of this energy goes to help meet different utilities requirements,"says Toby McKay with the Washington State D.N.R.

There are 108 turbines on D.N.R. land throughout Washington, including four on state owned land on Jump off Joe Butte near Kennewick.

The other wind turbines are in Kittitas, Klickitat, Walla Walla, Garfield, and Columbia counties.
