Sorry if the quote seems a little disjointed but blame that on Google since changing the article in Google Books to text format is a messy process, but you get the essencials, I'm sure.

Here's one that Dennis and John might find interesting:

Most of us are familiar with such programs as Head Start, but the concept of early education is not a recent concept, and as far back as 1892, Youngstown had a school that specialized in pre-school education:

"The Kindergarten Work of Youngstown Ohio is but ten years old an infant of splendid virility surely for it has accomplished much in its short life and promises more The splendid new memorial kindergarten is described elsewhere in this number of the Kindergarten Magazine The initial movement in Youngstown culminated in the formation of a kindergarten association in April 1892 Miss Emilie Bonneli president.  Its object was the establishment and maintenance of free kindergartens in the city Miss Mary S Morgan graduate of the Chicago Free Kindergarten Association was the kindergartner from the beginning doing training work as well The kindergarten opened September 1892 and the training class also of three students The kindergarten opened on E Boardman street moving in turn to E Federal and to E Front streets.

"The Baldwin Memorial Building marks the culmination of many hopes and much earnest visiting and planning Miss Morgan has gathered hints from visits to kindergarten in Boston New York and Philadelphia and the final outcome promises to complete and satisfactory in every particular The site will be jointly by the kindergarten association and Mr Baldwin.  Mr W H Baldwin is a retired business man who was one of the projectors and original of the Ohio Steel Co of Youngstown and has held important positions other corporations and has long been identified with the commercial manufacturing and social life of Youngstown Other public spirited citizens and different women's clubs have also generously contributed toward the funds.  The children too have contributed."

This school later moved to the location at Front and Champion streets to be most advantageous in that the children most desired to be afforded its advantages can be reached and can reach it most easily.

That building was known as the Baldwin Memorial Kindergarden.
