Its the union mentality at work.  They despise management so much that they would not even conceive of taking them at their word.  What is truly sad is that the next time this situation happens the union still won't learn the lessons of tamarkin, CALEX, and all the others who thought that they could play chicken and win.

did not contain any reductions
provided wage increases in each year of the proposed four-year agreement,
maintained health care benefits
replaced a failing union pension plan with a generous 401(k) benefit.

All good?

But then Giant Eagle had to add:
some modest productivity improvements

And the Union couldn't have any of that....

they preferred once again to call it a win and allow their members to lose their jobs instead ....

Just how do you justify that?

Unions are all about "solidarity", "pride" and "dignity" and less about making decisions in their own long term best interest.  I'll bet many of the soon to be jobless union members are still in denial and still think they did the right thing.  They never learn from past union mistakes that happened right here in this very valley.

Unions are basically full of people who cannot think for themselves and need a hive mind to think for them.  Unfortunately the union mentality and the mob mentality are practically one and the same.

The truth be told, how many priests and preachers ended up in the slammer ... how many educators (secular) ... how many doctors ... the list is endless my friend and the road to the slammer has many ruts in it from all that have passed that way.
By the way my esteemed friend who is it that is now running the big band show on WKTL? Jay refuses to tell me  :'(

Irishbobcat

And Giant Eagle would have gone bankrupt if they would have granted the union's requests? Please....you're all not that dumb......

Corporations use unions as scapegoats......just like you conservatives...always have and always will until there are none left....and then we'll all be making $8 dollars an hour with no benefits and be asked to donate food to our fellow employees who can't put food on their own table....

Oh, and Towntalk.....how many corporate CEO's have been sent to jail for being corrupt? Just as many.....

Towntalk

You have that right ... but don't you know that in the grand scheme of things in this world, Unions are higher than God, and the union leaderhip more honest and truthful than Jesus ... oh wait a minute, how many union leaders have gone to the slammer having been found guilty of corruption, and how many unions have been controlled by the Mafia? The Teamsters have quite the record for corruption, and whatever happened to Jimmy Hoffa?

sfc_oliver

Really?

The Union voted this down twice.....

"The proposed contract that was rejected twice by the union's membership did not contain any reductions. It provided wage increases in each year of the proposed four-year agreement, maintained health care benefits, and replaced a failing union pension plan with a generous 401(k) benefit. It did contain some modest productivity improvements that are in place at similar distribution facilities, but it also offered to build a new facility in the Youngstown area. Unfortunately, the team members rejected that offer and the Company has now found a better alternative for its frozen food distribution needs."

But it's never the Unions fault.

Giant Eagle would have pulled the plug anyway....wake up conservatives! Quit blaming unions...blame ownership as well!

sfc_oliver

Big unions have a habit of this, and then they call it a win...

PD

Agreed.
They tried several times to do anything to cut costs to build the new facility. Now they are moving. Good luck!!
