Title: Cardinal Mooney High School May Move From The South Side
Post by: jay on July 13, 2012, 05:56:28 AM
Some sad news to report

The administrators of Cardinal Mooney High School are conducting a study to move the high school out of the south side of Youngsotwn and possibly relocate to the suburbs.  One of several reasons for the move is that the school is located in a high crime area.

High crime and as I understand it, getting worse. I really can't blame them.

this is ole news. i questioned jw a couple of yrs ago concerning this matter. his response was looking for a job in dc. where is all wise and knowledgable tarpley on this issue? cms is in her ward. she is too busy sitting on her arse while watching her ward go to hades. she thinks she mayoral material.

I really can't comment on the city and the city officials too much since i bailed out.....

That's why I can't blame anyone else for doing the same......

Are they going to bail on the donors who bought their artificial turf practice fields?

Or are they going to tear up the carpet and take it with them?

They better get some dough if they leave the carpet.....

I've talked with a few people connected to the Mooney community.  The move to the suburbs is more likely than ever.

I'm not....moving south into the burgs or into the country will help them attract more students. Parents who still fear
sending their children into Youngstown will now be more likely to make the move if the school moves out of Youngstown.....
Moving south towards Canfield is a strategic move....move where the population is.....

It never did make sense having two Catholic High Schools in Youngstown, and as to the location its at now, I agree that its simply not safe, and from the looks of things, it won't get any better anytime soon.

Aside from Mooney's current location, here are some facts that many are ignoring. Many of the Catholic schools are now closed due to declining enrollment. The Catholic population is down hence the closing of a number of churches, and the remaining population are having a hard time maintaining support of their churches and can no longer support offering scolarships to non-Catholic students in order to maintain a viable student population.

With the decreased population, the time will come when the remaining Catholic High School will face the possability of closing.

The largest segment of the city's Catholic population is senior citizens followed by poverty level families that have no other option than to sent their children to public schools.

These are facts, as hard as they maybe to take, and there is no getting around it.

PossablyJay might be thinking that the city councilperson can change the Bishop's mind, but that does not change the fact that there are not enough students in Youngstown to continue to support two high schools, and at this point the largest paying student group at Mooney lives outside Youngstown so it is in the best interest of the Church to move Mooney closer to the student body than to keep it in the city.

The city school system went through the same problem and closed three of its high schools.

What difference does it make?

I've heard that a south side councilman wants to run for Mayor of Youngstown.  If the person can't control crime and urban flight from his ward, what chance does the same person have of improving the conditions of the entire city?

The topic was Mooney moving and not the race for mayor of which there are a couple of threads that cover the race for mayor.

That is what the difference is.

Being that it's a private school....the good fathers will decide based on the merit of funding.....if there is more money to be made by moving..the school will move...and vice versa....

I believe Mooney will move south. The question will then be if students who live on the south side of the city which is now "Mooney territory" be allowed to still attend school in the city at Ursuline after the Mooney move?

That's the plan. The only question I have is what will happen to the building once the move is complete. Will it stand empty for years to come, will it be sold, or will it be demolished.

Is it a good idea to move Mooney to Western Reserve Road in Boardman? Of course it is. It makes perfect sense ... you go where the bulk of your student population is. I have my own personal views about Boardman, but that's a topic for another thread.

Ursuline is a great High School with a rich tradition and great standards of excellence, so what's the beef, it's not like the Mooney students left behind would be forced into a sub-standard school like our city schools.

I wonder if the councilmen ever offered Mooney an incentive to stay on the south side.  A safe neighborhood would be a good incentive.

My tears flow like a bubbling mountain stream down to the sea over the loss of Cardinal Mooney, just as they flowed when Sacred Heart School was closed. Sacred Heart was my parish, and my mother, was the church organist who also helped the Sisters with their students. Unfortunately, it's not up to us to dictate to the Bishop unless we want to go over to his head and appeal to the Cardinal or even the Pope.

I understand where Jay is coming from, and in most other matters, I agree with him, but there are some events in the lives of men over which our views, no matter how noble simply do not matter, and we are left gritting our teeth to cover the pain that rises out of the depths of our hearts, and move on to other matters.

LONG OVERDO UPDATE:

The Bishop, in his wisdom will not move Mooney after all. It will remain right where it is and will continue to turn out great students.
