It's a job u have to want to do...especially at that salary.  Do the math, 1 on, 2 off = 121 days a year.  121 days x 24 hrs = 2904 hrs a year.  24000 / 2904 = 8.26 per hr base pay not counting any overtime (rare) or holiday pay.  And that's for a city that was just rated as one of the cities with the most arsons last year.  So, sure, they'll come onto the force and without enough raises will happily leave when an opportunity presents itself in another city.  That's the lowest starting salary for a paid firefighter I've heard of.  20 years ago when I took my civil service Firefighter exams in another area of OH, the going starting salary ranged from from 32000 to 36000....20 YEARS AGO.  WTH are they thinking?  Have the pay scales really changed that much?  Or do they want to pay to train them to lose them to another department if they don't love the job here?

That's less than $12 an hour for a new firefighter.

Think of all the retire/rehire employees who are now making upwards of $150,000 a year.   :P

the city leadership wonders why the city has a hard time keeping new firefighters after they receive thier training and few yrs of experiences with fighting fires.
